East Coast Holidays

You won’t believe how much there is to discover on an American East Coast holiday. This region is where sleepy rural settlements rub shoulders with buzzing metropolises, where the European history of the country began and where modern history is still being made and where you can cruise under the world’s most famous waterfall or stand atop the world’s most famous skyscrapers. And the best thing about the East Coast? Cities and natural sights are all within easy reach of each other so you can really make the most of your time.

When it comes to exciting urban spaces, the East Coast has more than its fair share. New York, Washington DC and Philadelphia are all top city break destinations with countless famous attractions, efficiently connected by road and also by rail so that you can choose not to hire a car if you’d prefer not to. Explore a little bit further and you can discover the boardwalks and casinos of Atlantic City, the colonial architecture of Annapolis and the cobbled streets of Fells Point, Baltimore.

If you’re a history buff then the East Coast should be at the top of your bucket list. Since the days of the first New World colonies, US history has been shaped here, from Jamestown Virginia, founded in 1607 to the battles of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and more recent historic milestones. You can even visit the homes of the first, third, fourth, fifth and current US president!

There’s plenty for outdoor enthusiasts to see and do too, with mountain ranges, lakes, waterfalls and great coastline all on the agenda here. Try water sports at the Finger Lakes in upstate New York, drive the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway, hike the Appalachian Trail or raft the white waters of West Virginia. On America East Coast holidays, there really is something for everyone.

Famous Sights

The Capitol Building with its famous rotunda; Lady Liberty bearing her torch; the Liberty Bell, worn and cracked; the boats on Central Park Lake and the iconic landmarks of the National Mall: East Coast holidays are full of iconic sights you won't want to forget, so make sure you've got your camera primed.

Buying Power

From the designer stores of Fifth Avenue to the one-off boutiques of the Lower East Side, New York's shopping is legendary. But all the East Coast cities offer top quality retail therapy, whether it's department stores like Macy's and Saks you're after, or quirky galleries and antique shops. Just shop around!

World-Class Museums

There's top class art on all fronts, from New York's Museum of Modern Art to Philadelphia's Brown Foundation. Washington has the might of the Smithsonian, with 19 mind-blowing museums covering everything from natural history to air and space travel; NYC has the dual gems of the Met and the Guggenheim; and kids will love Philly’s interactive Please Touch Museum.

Weight Of History

History unfolds at every turn on East Coast holidays. At Philadelphia's Independence Park you can tour Independence Hall, where events key to the American Revolution unfolded; Colonial Williamsburg is probably the most extensively restored 18th century town in the USA and at Gettysburg National Military Park, you can see where one of the great battles of the Civil War was fought.

Force Of Nature

The Adirondacks and the Appalachians; the Finger Lakes and the Thousand Islands; the cute colonial villages of Delaware and the clapboard communities of Pennsylvania Dutch Country: These are just some of the many rural landscapes and natural wonders to be found in East Coast America. And we haven’t even mentioned the coastline yet.

You’re going to need an ESTA!
For anyone travelling to the USA, the US authorities have imposed a requirement for passengers travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), to register for Electronic Travel Authority. Passengers who have not applied for and received travel authorisation via ESTA prior to travel could be denied boarding of the plane or be refused admission at the US entry destination. However, neither possession of a visa, nor meeting the basic requirements for travelling visa-free on the VWP, guarantees admission to the United States. As with most countries, the final determination of admissibility is made by immigration officials at the port of entry.

How do I apply for ESTA?
Just fill in the online application form which you can find at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Before you travel, you will need to visit this website and fill in the form.

When is best to apply for my travel authorisation?
You will need to apply for entry via ESTA at least a minimum of 72 hours prior to travel if you intend to travel to America.

How long is the travel authorisation valid for?
Your ESTA will be valid for up to two years, or until your passport expires. It is also valid for multiple entries to America. However you must amend any necessary data, such as date of travel and your address whilst in the US.
