Holidays to South Carolina

When you're drinking a cup a sweet tea beneath the shade of a palmetto tree and the air around you is full of the sultriness of the Deep South, then you know you're in South Carolina. This is a state where you can feel the history in the air, and old plantation houses and antebellum homes stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Revolutionary War sites. But it's also a place with all mod cons, where you can get your thrills riding roller coasters, battling white water rapids and teeing off on first-class golf courses.

The beach is a good a place to start on South Carolina holidays. Myrtle Beach is famed for its 60 miles of golden sands complete with everything you could ever imagine for the perfect family vacation. Hilton Head Island has an upscale vibe with pristine beaches and manicured greens, and is the ideal destination if you're into tennis, golf and beach games on the sand. And all along the coast there are deserted inlets and nature preserves where you can stroll among the dunes looking out for alligators and turtles.

South Carolina holidays are about more than just the coast though: head inland and you'll find scenery to make your head spin. Hike to the state's highest point in up country Caesars State Park for sweeping views over the Blue Ridge Mountains. Try one of South Carolina's 12 inland lakes and you'll discover tranquil waters, great fishing, and watersports. Or explore Conagree National Park for shady swamps and the tallest tress in the eastern US.

When you want to get in touch with America's past, head for Charleston's Historic District or to Fort Sumter where the first shots of the Civil War were fired. Then look around and you'll agree that the present in South Carolina is every bit as good.

Why not explore the following destination in South Carolina

The dazzling Historic District, where the skyline is peppered with church steeples and the gardens are a riot of jasmine and magnolias, is a gorgeous place to wander on Charleston holidays. Find out more >>

Get a flavour of what life was like in the South Carolina of old at stunning Middleton Place Gardens (the oldest landscaped gardens in America) with its low country rice plantation where slaves once toiled. Also take care not to miss the 17th-century Magnolia Plantation, which has azalea-lined pathways, sprawling live oaks, and cypress-tupelo swamps patrolled by alligators and egrets.

Myrtle Beach

The beach action comes fast and furious at Myrtle Beach, where sun bathing and swimming are just two of the options. There's also water parks; shopping malls; bars; clubs; live entertainment at the Carolina Opry and the House of Blues; casino boat cruises that sail out of the harbour; an enormous Ferris wheel; amusement parks; and a whole swathe of golf courses.

Nothing beats clopping round Charleston's picturesque Historic District in a horse-drawn carriage while the driver narrates fascinating stories of times gone by. If you prefer two legs to four, then wander the cobblestone streets on foot and you'll discover row upon row of handsome 18th- and 19-th century buildings, complete with gorgeous gardens ablaze with azaleas and jasmine.

White Water Thrills

Officially designated as 'Wild & Scenic', the Chattooga is a free flowing river that responds quickly to rainfall. With grade IV and V rapids along the way, a thrilling ride is guaranteed as you drift through the beautiful Sumter and Chattahoochee National Forests.

Towns & Cities

There's plenty of towns and cities worth exploring on South Carolina holidays. State capital Columbia has museums, galleries and Lake Murray; Camden comes complete with historic homes, superb antiques shopping and Civil War sites; and Greenville, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, has great restaurants, a cool vibe and the spectacular Falls Park on the Reedy River.
