Holidays in Washington DC

Walk shoulder-to-shoulder with some of America's key decision makers (although you might not realise it) and look out for Men in Black in this most influential of cities. Washington is  the powerhouse of the nation and you'll find yourself gazing in awe at magnificent but familiar iconic buildings, or paying your respects at memorials to the country's great and good. It's where politics and history meet on a grand scale, and you can't fail but to be impressed.

The National Mall is the perfect place to start on holidays in Washington DC since it's a microcosm of everything the city is about. Along it's grandiose two-mile length you'll find a string of weighty American institutions wrapped up in some stand-out  architecture, including the domed Capitol Building, where the wheels of government turn. Memorials to some key events and figures in American history also pepper the Mall, plus there are a dozen or so world-class museums to drop into.

But alongside its political might, D.C. is  also a living, breathing city with some fabulous neighbourhoods to explore. Dupont Circle, with its cafés, restaurants, shops and expanse of green is always alive with people, and a great place to while away a warm summer's evening. Adams Morgan is at the city's cutting edge, and has hip bars, galleries and clubs;  and Georgetown is upscale with brick townhouses and top-class restaurants and boutiques.

There's plenty to keep the kids happy too, with giant pandas at the National Zoo, while the Spy Museum and the Newseum provide hours of fun for budding James Bonds and wannabe war correspondents. Plus there's outdoor activities too, like wandering in the parks or boat trips on the Potomac River - and much more besides. Maybe the 'DC' in the city's name should really stand for 'Do Come.'

Thanks to United Airlines, getting there has never been easier! United Airlines now have 3 direct flights to Washington Dulles International Airport departing from London Heathrow daily. Plus with their high levels of in-flight comfort and personal service, you'll arrive feeling refreshed and ready to explore this fantastic city.

The White House

The White HouseHolidays in Washington DC wouldn't be complete without a visit to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue - the home of the President of the United States.

The Smithsonian

Every city deserves a Smithsonian - but only DC's got one. The 15 museums and the national zoo that make up this mind-blowing cultural resource are nearly all free, and cover every subject from art and natural history, through to American Indians or air and space travel. It's the world's largest museum complex and there's something to captivate everyone.

Capital Shopping

From unique boutiques to high-end fashion, Washington DC is a shopper’s paradise. Head to Georgetown for boutiques and antique stores, for books, art galleries and gift shops there’s nowhere better than the Dupont Circle, or experience DC institution Eastern Market on Capitol Hill. Out of town, Simon Shopping Destinations’ Fashion Centre at Pentagon City is a great option.

Memorials

A tour of the city's memorials is a must on holidays in Washington DC. Towering historical figures like Lincoln, Jefferson and Martin Luther King are all remembered in monuments that are beautifully illuminated at night. Others mark events and make for a moving sight - like the names of over 58,000 dead soldiers at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

After Dark

There's plenty to keep you occupied at night. The Kennedy Center has top theatre and performing arts, including free concerts every day at 6pm. There's Broadway hits at venues like the National Theatre, and a buzzing bar, clubbing and restaurant scene in districts like Adams Morgan and Georgetown.
