From New York there is an early morning departure for Philadelphia, where you will spend the morning exploring the historic district of the City of Brotherly Love and the birthplace of a Nation. See the Liberty Bell and stroll through Independence National Historic Park and Mall. Then continue to the capital of the USA, and home to the president – Washington, DC. Stay 2 nights at the Omni Shoreham Hotel (or similar).
Enjoy a city tour with such highlights as the US Capital Building, Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, the White House and Arlington National Cemetery, site of the JFK Memorial. Spend the remainder of the day at your leisure to explore some of the many museums comprising the Smithsonian Institute or simply stroll along the banks of the Potomac River.
Day 3: Washington, DC – Gettysburg – Niagara Falls, Canada.
Today, visit Gettysburg National Military Park, site of one of the most decisive battles of the American Civil War and the place where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous address in 1863. Your tour then takes you through upstate New York to Buffalo and finally across the international border into Canada, where the thundering noise and mist of Niagara Falls permeates the night time air. Stay 1 night at Best Western Cairn Croft (or similar).
Day 4: Niagara Falls – Detroit
Spend the morning sightseeing at Niagara Falls. Walk along Table Rock and view the thundering waters of Horseshoe Falls. In the late afternoon, return to the United States, crossing the border and continuing to your hotel in Detroit, known as ‘Motor City USA’. Enjoy your evening at leisure. Home to Motown, Techno and the Henry Ford Museum, Detroit boasts a thriving theatre district and great restaurants to try. Stay 1 night at Best Western Greenfield Inn (or similar).
Day 5: Detroit – Chicago
Travel along the shores of Lake Michigan today as you head to Chicago, where you will enjoy a short tour of the city’s highlights including Lake Shore Drive, the Magnificent Mile and Navy Pier. The Windy City’s stunning high rise architecture and one of the world’s tallest buildings, the Willis Tower (admission not included), provides a dramatic backdrop for this cultural and financial centre. Stay 2 nights at the Hilton Oakbrook Resort (or similar).
Day 6: Chicago
You have a full day at leisure in Chicago to explore as you please! Perhaps join your ATI Tour Director and fellow travellers on an Architectural River Cruise, the best way to see Chicago’s impressive and famous architecture up close (optional). Or, why not squeeze in a shopping trip along Michigan Avenue’s Magnificent Mile? Take a ride up to the Hancock Observatory for aerial views of the city; explore the many free concerts and exhibitions dotted around Millennium Park which is also home to the iconic ‘Bean’; and make sure to sample some of the famous Chicago deep-dish pizza.
Day 7: Chicago – Mississippi River Crossing – Sioux City
The tour continues as you make your way through the USA’s Midwest farm country, abundant with corn fields, wheat fields and dairy farms. Then, cross the mighty Mississippi River and travel into the state of Iowa to arrive just as Lewis & Clark did 200 years ago on the banks of the Missouri River. In the evening, rrive into Sioux City, situated in the Great Plains of the USA , Be sure to get out and about to see explore this rural city and sample the local cuisines. Stay 1 night at Marina Inn & Suites (or similar).
Day 8: Sioux City – Badlands – Mt. Rushmore – Rapid City
Travel westward through the grasslands of South Dakota and onwards to the towering spires and pinnacles of Badlands National Park, once home to the buffalo and antelope and dotted with miles of dramatically shaped and colourful rock formations. Continue on to the Black Hills, sacred to the Plains Indians and home to the iconic Mount Rushmore, an enormous monument dedicated to the four great American presidents: Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt. You will overnight in nearby Rapid City. Stay 1 night at the Best Western Ramkota (or similar).
Day 9: Rapid City – Bighorn Mountains – Cody
Your cross state USA journey continues as you enter the state of Wyoming today, home to twelve mountain ranges intermixed with deserts and rolling grasslands. Your drive takes you past the Bighorn Mountains, the sister range of the Rocky Mountains, where lush grassland and alpine meadows interlace with glacially-carved valleys and mountain walls. Continue on to Cody for the evening, located on the outskirts of the magnificent Yellowstone National Park. This quintessential cowboy town embodies the great frontier of this northwest region. * Stay 1 night at Buffalo Bill Village or Holiday Inn (or similar).
Day 10: Cody – Yellowstone
Enjoy a day of discovery today, as you drive past the striking mountains in Wyoming to Yellowstone, America’s first National Park. Enjoy a comprehensive sightseeing tour of this immense geothermal wonderland to see the natural geysers, waterfalls, canyons and wildlife that fill this great park. The highlights of this tour will include a visit to the Yellowstone Lake, the infamous Old Faithful geyser and Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone Canyon’s majestic falls. Stay 1 night at Gray Wolf Inn/Brandin Iron Inn (or similar).
Day 11: Yellowstone - Grand Teton – Salt Lake City
This morning’s journey is through the rugged, snow-capped mountains which mark the boundary of the Grand Teton National Park. Visit the Snake River Outlook and try to capture on film the stunning landscape made famous by Ansel Adams. This prairie land is home to wild buffalo (tatonka!), moose and elk. Later, arrive in the Mormon State of Utah and take a short city tour of its capital, Salt Lake City. The followers of Brigham Young built one of the best-planned cities in the country. See the State Capital building and visit famed Temple Square and the Tabernacle before arriving at the hotel for the evening. We recommend a visit to the Rooftop Restaurant for dinner, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Temple Square. Stay 1 night at Red Lion Hotel Salt Lake Downtown (or similar).
Day 12: Salt Lake City – Bryce Canyon
Continue today to spectacular Bryce Canyon, where a tour through a multi-coloured world of sandstone spires and pinnacles known as ‘hoodoos’, will dazzle the eye. In the evening, (if weather permitting) be sure to gaze upon the stunning night sky filled with brilliant constellations of stars, whilst the aroma of pinewood campfires surround you. Stay 1 night at Bryce View Lodge (or similar).
Day 13: Bryce Canyon – Lake Powell – Grand Canyon – Flagstaff
Depart Bryce Canyon this morning and journey to the impressive Lake Powell, where crystal blue water laps against towering red-rock canyon walls. Lake Powell is the secondlargest man-made lake in America, and one in a series of lakes formed by the damming of the Colorado River. Afterwards, visit the colossal Grand Canyon National Park, one of the seven great natural wonders of the world. Stop at the Canyon rim to fully experience this mile-deep canyon’s plunging gorges, rising spires, extinct volcanoes, and below the rim, the winding Colorado River. Your day ends in Flagstaff, a famous stop along the iconic Route 66. Stay 1 night at Days Inn Route 66 Flagstaff (or similar).
Day 14: Flagstaff – Seligman/Route 66 – Las Vegas
This morning depart Flagstaff and travel on to Las Vegas, the dazzling ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’. Along the way, pass through Seligman, a town built along Route 66 that looks as if it were frozen in time 60 years ago. The remainder of the day is at leisure for you to explore the famous Las Vegas Strip, with its eccentrically themed resort casinos, shopping opportunities and world-class entertainment and evening shows. Stay 1 night at the Luxor Las Vegas (or similar).
: Las Vegas – Mojave Desert – Beverly Hills, Los Angeles – London
Your tour nears its end as you travel to your final destination of Los Angeles via the Mojave Desert, home of the world’s tallest thermometer, at 134 feet (41 meters) high. Clusters of unique Joshua trees dot this impressive mountainous landscape. Upon arrival in the City of Angels a city tour will commence, with visits to Hollywood, Sunset Strip and parts of Beverly Hills, after which your escorted coach tour will conclude.
