Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: London – Denver

Fly from London to Denver, arriving the same day. Pick up your hire car from the airport and drive into the Mile High City for your overnight stay Stay 1 night at the Holiday Inn Express Denver Downtown (or similiar).



Day 2: Denver – Rocky Mountain National Park – Steamboat Springs (approx. 160 miles)

Today, head via the Western city of Boulder into the Rocky Mountain National Park, a 415 square mile area of outstanding natural beauty. Take the Trail Ridge Road which climbs up to 12,000 feet above sea level with plenty of lookouts to take in the views. There are also over 300 miles of hiking trails from if you want to stretch your legs. Your destination for the night is Steamboat Springs, a pretty ski resort. Stay 1 night at the Holiday Inn Steamboat Springs (or similar).





Day 3: Steamboat Springs – Dinosaur National Monument – Flaming Gorge – Rock Springs (approx. 280 miles)

Your drive continues today into the stunning Dinosaur National Monument, an area that has produced more dinosaur skeletons, skulls and bones than any other dig in the world. Further on, the aptly named Flaming Gorge features spectacular sandstone cliffs and a huge reservoir popular with water sports enthusiasts. Continue across the Utah/ Wyoming state line to Rock Springs for your overnight stop. Stay 1 night at the Quality Inn Rock Springs (or similar).



Day 4: Rock Springs – Jackson (approx. 190 miles)

Leave Rock Springs for another day of scenic driving. Travel through the Wind River Gorge and then north over the high chaparral of Wyoming to Jackson. This buzzing Western town is a Mecca for outdoors enthusiasts and a base for the nearby ski resorts as well as Grand Teton National Park. Discover cafés, restaurants and fun souvenir shops. In the summer months you can even watch a nightly cowboy shoot-out in the town square. Stay 1 night at the 49er Inn Jackson (or similar).



Day 5: Jackson – Grand Teton National Park – Yellowstone National Park (approx. 80 miles)

A nice short drive today gives you the opportunity to discover two fantastic national parks – Grand Teton and Yellowstone. Both are part of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of the largest intact mid-latitude temperate ecosystems in the world, which has retained the same species of flora and fauna since pre-historic times. Explore epic landscapes and geo-thermal wonders before continuing to your hotel for the night. Stay 1 night at the Brandin Iron Motel (or similar).



Day 6: Yellowstone – Salt Lake City

Leave Yellowstone and briefly cross into the Gem State of Idaho before reaching Utah and its capital Salt Lake City. Here you’ll have time to visit the grand Temple Square, home of the Mormon Salt Lake Temple and the Tabernacle, where you may have the opportunity to catch a concert by the world famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Stay 1 night at the Shilo Inn Salt Lake City (or similar).



Day 7: Salt Lake City – Bryce Canyon National Park (approx. 250 miles)

Cross the stunning Wasatch Mountain Range en route to southern Utah. Here you’ll arrive at Bryce Canyon National Park, with its colourful ‘hoodoos’ (spires) and imposing rock formations. Stay 2 nights at the Bryce View Lodge (or similar).



Day 8: Bryce Canyon

You have a full day to explore the fantastical landscapes of Bryce Canyon National Park today. You can also visit nearly Zion National Park which boasts some of the world’s most amazing sandstone formations, formed millions of years ago. Both parks offer great opportunities for hiking, horse riding and rock climbing.



Day 9: Bryce Canyon – Lake Powell (approx. 190 miles)

Leave the natural wonders of Bryce Canyon National Park behind and make your way eastwards towards Page. En route you’ll pass through the historic town of Kanab and you might want to make a stop here. Kanab is known by the locals as ‘Little Hollywood’ thanks to its starring role in Western films and TV series like The Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke and The Outlaw Josey Wales. From here, travel to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, where you’ll find an almost Martian landscape of red rock surrounding North America’s largest man-made lake, Lake Powell. Stay 1 night at the Super 8 Page Lake Powell (or similar).



Day 10: Lake Powell - Monument Valley – Cortez (approx. 280 miles)

Leave early to make the most of your day today as you travel across the Navajo Indian Reservation, through the Painted Desert to Monument Valley. This stunning valley of red sandstone formations is best explored by jeep with a Navajo guide. Don’t miss the opportunity to try tasty Navajo tacos too before continuing your journey back into Colorado, to Cortez, your destination for the night. Stay 1 night at the Best Western Turquoise Inn (or similar).



Day 11: Cortez – Mesa Verde National Park - Durango (approx. 80 miles)

Make your way to Mesa Verde National Park. This unique park offers an insight into the lives of the Ancestral Pueblo people, who lived here from around 600 – 1300 AD. The park protects almost 5,000 archaeological sites including spectacular cliff dwellings carved into the rock. From here, continue to the charming former gold-mining town of Durango. Stay 1 night at the Durango Downtown Inn (or similar).



Day 12: Durango – Taos (approx. 200 miles)

There’s time to stroll along Durango's main street lined with south-western boutiques this morning, before leaving for New Mexico. You’ll pass the spa resort of Pagosa Springs on your way to the artist’s colony of Taos. Stay 1 night at the Holiday Inn Don Fernando (or similar).



Day 13: Taos – Santa Fe - Taos (approx. 140 miles)

The remarkable Taos Indian Pueblo is has been inhabited for over 800 years by as many as 1,400 Taos Indians and has remained virtually unchanged in all that time. After having a look around here, drive south to Santa Fe, the oldest capital city in the USA. Here, you can walk around the city’s historic centre with its distinctive Pueblo Revival architecture and boutique galleries. Return to Taos for a second night.

Day 14: Taos – Denver (approx. 310 miles)

It’s time to return to Colorado today and make your way back to Denver for your last night. Spend some time discovering Denver’s buzzing arts districts and great galleries or perhaps browse the shops around Cherry Creek. Denver is known for its locally brewed beer and you can sample 20 breweries on a self-guided tour along the Denver Beer Trail. Stay 1 night at the Hotel VQ at Mile High (or similar).



Day 15: Denver – London

After a leisurely start today, check out of your hotel and drop the car rental off at the airport before boarding the overnight flight back to London.
