Day 1 Chicago to Springfield (approx. 200 miles)
After discovering the sights of Chicago, collect your Alamo rental car and cruise down Route 66, stopping by Bill Shea’s Gas Station Museum before arriving into Illinois’ capital, Springfield. Explore the legacy of President Abraham Lincoln by visiting his former home, the Presidential Library and Museum and nearby Lincoln’s New Salem – a reconstruction of the village where Lincoln spent his early years. Stay 1 night at Holiday Inn Express Springfield (or similar).
Day 2 Springfield to Alton (approx. 88 miles)
Continue down Route 66 to the Alton area and see the confluence of The Mississippi, Illinois and Missouri rivers along a 33-mile stretch of road rich in history. Visit the quaint towns of Galena and Elsah, known for their wineries and unique inns, whilst in nearby Collinsville, discover the ancient remains of a Native American city at Cahokia Mounds, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stay 1 night at Beall Mansion B&B (or similar).
Day 3 Alton to Peoria (approx. 165 miles).
Today, head to Peoria where you can begin your visit at the Riverfront Visitors Center, housed in one of the oldest buildings in Peoria. Explore Peoria’s Riverfront, which is popular for festivals and home to the newly opened Peoria Riverfront Museum, featuring a 3D theatre and planetarium. If time allows, why not take a cruise on the Spirit of Peoria for scenic views of the Illinois River. Stay 1 night at Peoria Marriott Pere Marquette (or similar).
Day 4 Peoria to Galena (approx. 181 miles).
Travel back up the Great River Road, with a chance to stop in Fulton to see the Windmill ‘de Immigrant’ before arriving into Galena, where over 85 percent of the town is considered a national monument. Find a town steeped in rich history dating back to the Black Hawk Wars between the Native Americans and settlers. Stay 2 nights at The Irish Cottage (or similar).
Day 5 Galena
Galena is known as "The City that Time Forgot" for its rich 19th century heritage. Spend the day exploring with a stroll down the lovely Main Street or perhaps visit to one of the area’s grand houses like Ulysses S. Grant’s Home and the Washburne House. For something completely different you can take a trip to the Galena Winery and Vineyards, located in a beautiful setting, 6 miles out of town.
Day 6 Galena to Rockford (approx. 77 miles).
A short drive through rolling hills and small towns take you to your final Illinois destination of Rockford. The Burpee Museum is home to ‘Jane’, a rarely-found teenage T-Rex. Take a stroll through Anderson Japanese Gardens, watch history come to life at Midway Village Museum, and outdoor enthusiasts can find golf, biking and kayaking opportunities close by. Stay 1 night at Courtyard Rockford (or similar).
Day 7 Rockford to London (approx. 73 miles).
Your Illinois discovery comes to an end today as you drive to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to return your rental car and board your overnight flight to London.
