Days 1- 3: London – Raleigh - Durham
Depart London on your same day flight to Raleigh-Durham and embark on your North Carolina adventure. Pick up your Alamo car, then on to visit the city's excellent museums, eclectic dining and lively nightlife scene. Stay 3 nights at Holiday Inn Raleigh (Crabtree Valley Mall) (or similar).
Day 4: Raleigh - Durham ��� Boone (approx. 180 miles)
Head out west today, perhaps making a stop at the historic village of Old Salem for morning coffee. Ahead lie the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and the picturesque mountain towns of Boone and Blowing Rock. Stay 1 night at Best Western Blue Ridge Plaza (or similar).
Day 5: Boone – Blue Ridge Parkway – Asheville (approx. 85 miles)
Today, you’ll drive along one of America’s finest and most scenic roads, the Blue Ridge Parkway. The day will end at the eclectic town of Asheville, famous for its top-notch dining scene and local breweries. Stay 2 nights at the Crowne Plaza Resort Asheville (or similar).
Day 6: Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Today, pay a visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, named by the local Cherokee Indians as the ‘Place of Blue Smoke’. Outdoor centres, activities and even a scenic railway all provide different ways to experience this National Park.
Day 7: Asheville – Charlotte (approx. 124 miles)
Another scenic drive today as you take the highway southeast, firstly to Chimney Rock State Park, then on to Lake Lure, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Stay 2 nights at Four Points by Sheraton Charlotte (or similar).
Day 8: Charlotte
There’s no shortage of activities in this exciting city, from NASCAR races to great museums. For a day of thrills, try Carowinds, a 398-acre amusement park.
Day 9: Charlotte - Wilmington (approx. 210 miles)
Continue your North Carolina journey today to the city of Wilmington, known for its commercial studios. Film-buffs should be sure to visit the EUE Screen Gems Studios or take the Hollywood Location Walk to experience the charm of this historic city. Stay 2 nights at the Holiday Inn Wilmington Market Street (or similar).
Day 10: Wilmington and Cape Fear
Wilmington’s Wrightsville Beach is among North Carolina’s best, ideal for time out and beach pursuits. Away from the beach, visit Wilmington's beautiful gardens to see unique plant and insect life. Also worth a visit is Cape Fear, a prominent headland jutting into the Atlantic Ocean from Bald Head Island.
Day 11: Wilmington – Beaufort - Havelock (approx. 96 miles)
Travel along the beautiful Crystal Coast to Beaufort, home to the world-class North Carolina Maritime Museum. From here, continue to Havelock, your base for the night. Stay 1 night at Hampton Inn Havelock (or similar).
Day 12: Havelock – Oracoke – Cape Hatteras – Nags Head (approx. 165 miles)
Watch for the wild horses on the Outer Banks and potter around Oracoke Village’s narrow streets. Continue island hopping with the free car ferry to Cape Hatteras, a bird watchers paradise, and on past isolated beaches to Kitty Hawk, site of the Wright Brothers first flight. Stay 2 nights at the Comfort Inn South Oceanfront, Nags Head (or similar).
Day 13: Outer Banks - Bodie Island
Spend a day at leisure enjoying the sights of Bodie Island and the charming small island villages. Watch out for the hang-gliders floating over the tall sand dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. Perhaps you’ll be tempted to join them?
Day 14: Outer Banks – Raleigh -D urham - London
Head back inland today, first calling at Roanoke Island, the site of the first English colony in North Carolina, and then back to Raleigh-Durham airport where you will drop off your hire car and board your flight back to London.
