Day 1: London – San Francisco
As the gateway to northern California, San Francisco is your first stop for this fly drive holiday. There’s no need to use a car in San Francisco, so make your way into the city where a myriad of popular sights and attractions are waiting to be discovered. Stay 3 nights at the Best Western Plus The Tuscan (or similar).
Day 2-3: San Francisco
With the imposing Golden Gate Bridge in view, check out Pier 39 at Fisherman’s Wharf, also home to a colony of resident sea lions. For those who wish to shop until they drop, a visit to Union Square is a must; home to a Westfield Shopping centre as well as stand-alone stores such as Macys, Tiffany & Co and Forever 21 to name a few, the options are endless. For sports fans, a visit to the AT&T baseball park in downtown, home to the San Francisco 49ers is well worth a visit. With activities such as riding the iconic cable cars, biking the Golden Gate Bridge and exploring Golden Gate Park, home to the California Academy of Sciences all on offer, San Francisco is the perfect starting point to your holiday.
Day 4: San Francisco – Lake Tahoe (approx. 190 miles)
Pick up your Alamo car rental and head towards the south shores of Lake Tahoe, a waterfront paradise where snow-capped mountains stand sentinel over emerald waters. Be sure to stop at Emerald Bay en route as the panoramic views out across the lake are incredible. Stay 4 nights at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe (or similar).
Day 5-7: Lake Tahoe
Famous for its ski resorts such as Heavenly and Kirkwood as well as Las Vegas-style casinos, South Lake Tahoe is the ultimate year-round resort. With a great variety of watersports on offer such as parascending, water-skiing, jet skiing and sailing to name a few, sunny Tahoe days can be filled with adventure and exhilaration based around and on the lake. Be sure to book a tour on the M.S. Dixie II, an authentic paddle steamboat that offers charm, entertainment and the best views of the lake with cruises to Emerald Bay. Whether you wish to relax on the hidden beaches surrounding the lake, or get active with a hike or mountain bike up the hills before spending your evenings enjoying the nightlife of Heavenly and the casinos, you’ll find something for everyone to enjoy in Lake Tahoe.
Day 8: Lake Tahoe – London
After your exhilarating Californian holiday, you can choose to extend your trip and opt for a stay along the glorious Pacific coast, or return your car to San Francisco Airport before boarding your overnight flight back to London.
