San Francisco in June

There’s just something about San Francisco. For a city that’s home to some of the world’s biggest tech titans, 'Frisco' oozes colour, culture and personality. Perched on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, the city is full of natural wonders, a thriving arts scene, more restaurants than you could ever visit, and a contagiously energetic tech start-up culture. With so much to see and do, let us guide you through the highlights of a June visit.

What's it famous for?

The electric orange and towering behemoth that is the Golden Gate Bridge may be San Francisco’s longest enduring image. Once called “the bridge that couldn’t be built”, today it is one of the seven wonders of the modern world, crossing the strait of the Golden Gate from San Francisco to the Marin Headlands. Why not take a leisurely stroll across what may be the world’s most beautiful bridge. Its 1.7 miles across, so we won’t judge you if you decide to take a bus back. Some of the best views of San Francisco are from the bay. Find a sunset catamaran tour that takes you out on the bay – you will not be disappointed.

The Weather

June is the beginning of summer in San Francisco, and marks a refreshing change from the heavy rain that blights the early part of the year. In June, you’ll find average temperatures around 130C (560F), with highs of 190C (660F) and lows of 110C (520F). It’s the start of the dry season so there’s no need to pack an umbrella or raincoat. Fog on the other hand is common in June, and presents a fantastic photo opportunity as it blankets the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Great Outdoors

Golden Gate Park is a beautiful 1,000 acre park of redwood, green meadows, lakes, gardens, cycleways, and paths for walking and running. It also houses two museums; the de Young, specialising in art and fashion; and the California Academy of Sciences. In the summer, the de Young hosts live music, poetry readings, film and dance events; a treat for the senses every Friday from 6pm.

The American’s love of baseball is on another level. Nowhere is it more evident than at the San Francisco Giants AT&T Park. The baseball season begins in April, so visiting San Fran in June is a great time to get swept up in the excitement of a new sports season.

For a more relaxing atmosphere, head to Café Royale for a wonderful variety of events, ranging from karaoke and jazz nights, to film screenings and poetry readings – all within opulent Parisian styled surroundings.

Why not experience the colour and celebratory mood of San Francisco Pride (24th & 25 June), where the city’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community come out in style for a grand parade and street party.

When visiting San Francisco, do not miss a trip to the infamous former prison Alcatraz. ‘The Rock’ once housed some of America’s most dangerous criminals, including Al Capone and ‘The Birdman’ Robert Stroud. Today the island serves as a tourist destination, and home to a variety of wildlife and marine life. San Francisco is home to dozens of art galleries if you need to satisfy your thirst for culture. Head first to the gallery-packed four-floor 49 Geary downtown, before taking in Ratio 3 in the Mission district.

Food & Drink

San Francisco enjoys a bustling social scene, at the centre of which are its many bars and restaurants. For breakfast, it’s got to be Devil’s Teeth Bakery for their breakfast biscuit sandwich. For a casual lunch, our pick is Souvla, the most amazing little souvlaki place. Your dinner choice will depend entirely on how you’re feeling. There’s burritos a-plenty at La Taqueria in the Mission District, or for a change of pace, check out The Players Sports Grill and Arcade at the end of Pier 39. With over 200 live sports feeds from around the world it’s the perfect place to catch that crunch Premier League game. For the best view in town, head to The View Lounge at the Marriot hotel in downtown San Francisco and enjoy a cocktail (or several) whilst watching the sunset. For a more al fresco vibe, set up camp on the dunes of Ocean Beach to watch surfers catch the last set of the day as the sun goes down.

Creature Comforts

After suddenly appearing in 1989, as many as 1700 sea lions congregate each day on the docks at Pier 39, to socialise, canoodle and scratch their backsides for the regular gathering of camera clad tourists. They migrate away after July so be sure to catch the while you can.

The Offbeat

San Francisco is home to a Cable Car Museum. Need we say more? If that doesn’t tickle your fancy then why not visit the caves at Albion Castle or the Street Slides at Corwin Community Garden. And if a storm is rolling in, check out the Wave Organ, an instrument played by the sea!

Final Thoughts

San Francisco is full of exuberance, colour and life! A modern city with a natural landscape to stun the senses, make sure you get in touch with us to create your perfect San Francisco getaway this June!
