Top 10 things to do on Holidays to California

California is often touted as one of the most beautiful states in America, boasting serene oceans and fine dining as well as a huge range of activities for all age groups, making it a perfect destination for a family holiday. So if you do choose to visit California, what are the top 10 things you should do? If you would like us to tailor-make your dream holiday, please call our travel experts on 020 8290 9751.

San Diego

San Diego

Our number one pick for family fun in California has to be San Diego. With its wide range of activities, this great city literally has something for everyone. Sea World alone makes this city well worth a visit and is great fun for groups of all ages. Whether you decide to interact with the penguins and dolphins, watch a show, or simply view the exhibits you're guaranteed to have a good time. For the surfing fanatics La Jolla and Del Mar are known for having amazing waves. Finally no Oceanside activity is complete without kayaking and snorkeling through La Jolla Cove followed by a happy hour drink and dinner at the fantastic seafood restaurant Crab Catcher, complete with breathtaking sunset view.

Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara

A trip to Santa Barbara might require some forward planning if your family is going to ‘soak in’ everything, because it has so much to offer! Popularly known as the “American Riviera,” Santa Barbara has some of California’s best wine, shopping, and culture set against a stunning natural backdrop. Top on our list of to-dos include surfing lessons, beach walks, brunch ‘Cali’ style plus wine tours for the older family members.

Temecula

Temecula

Following on with the topic of wine, Temecula (not too far from San Diego), is all too often overlooked as a legitimate wine paradise. Most tourists opt for Napa and Sonoma when it comes to wine, but Temecula gives both places serious competition. You can easily beat the crowds and plan a picnic complete with some almond champagne (for the adults!) at Wilson Creek Winery. What really separates Wilson Creek from other wineries is that the kids have something to do as well—there is a playground, live music, and often special events at the weekends, so the whole family can enjoy themselves.

Amusment Park

Amusement Parks

No trip to California is complete without at least one visit to a theme park. For older families looking for thrills, our personal favorite is Six Flags Magic Mountain which seems to be comprised of an endless number of rollercoasters. For the families with younger children, there are the options of Universal Studios and Knotts Berry Farm, both of which offer something different. The former caters to the movie buff interested in seeing film sets and memorabilia. The latter is a smaller Disneyland filled with rides, shows, and dining options. Whichever Amusement Park you pick, you’re guaranteed a great time.

In n Out

In n Out

If you're looking for a quick and easy family treat then a visit to 'In n Out' could be just the thing? People across America and the world aren’t exactly sure why California’s ‘In n Out’ is so popular - that is, until they indulge in one of ‘In n Out's burgers themselves! Whether American or European, ‘In n Out’ should be added to your list of places to visit. This fast food joint is known for its ‘animal style’ anything. By this we mean, it doesn't matter what you order, just make sure you ask for ‘animal style.’ Trust us, you will have a whole new perspective on burgers, though try not to blame us too much if no other burger quite matches up again.

Disneyland

Disneyland

Disneyland doesn’t really need too much explaining, surely everyone knows about the happiest place on earth! Currently Disneyland is comprised of two theme parks : Disneyland and California Adventure. The latter was designed to attract an older crowd, so you can pick and choose based on your family’s ages and preferences. Top rated rides include Cars, Tower of Terror, and Splash Mountain. The 9:00 PM Disneyland World of Color show is spectacular. The show takes you through all the popular Disney movies by using a waterfall full of colors. We don’t want to give too much away but it’s truly an unmissable experience. Insider Tip: Be sure to get a fast pass for the show as early as 10 AM so that you have a good view.

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe provides a fantastic alternative to California’s traditional sun and sand... During the winter months, skiing and mountain sports are the main attractions and all ages enjoy the numerous snowy activities available. Alternatively the summer months also provide a whole host of family friendly activities. Rent a cabin, fish by the lake, go on a bike rides or simply enjoy a beautiful sunset. Whatever the season, Lake Tahoe is worth a visit.

The park has 13 campgrounds to pick from and any one of these will guarantee a perfect family holiday.

Blogger Profile - Betty Peng

I grew up in Southern California near LA and spent most of my adult life in Northern California in San Francisco. (Oh believe me, there is a big difference between the two locations!) In my early twenties, I was very fond of road trips and have camped and climbed most of the National Parks in the western part of the United States. I have always been amazed by the dramatic change in scenery a few miles brings when driving throughout the U.S. There is always something remarkable around every corner! I recently moved to London and hope to continue my travel whims in Europe.
