Top reasons to visit New York City this winter

New York City is one of those year-round destinations which is just as exciting in the winter as the summer. Need some convincing? We’re more than happy to oblige with ideas on what to do on a winter visit!

Pretend you’re in a movie

New York City offers a Christmas experience straight out of the movies. Think about it – Miracle on 34th Street, Home Alone 2, Elf, Scrooged… all set in New York. Grab a hot chocolate and soak up the seasonal cheer or bundle up against the cold for a snowball fight in Central Park (in the movies, it always snows at Christmas!).

New York

Shop until you drop

Black Friday – the day after Thanksgiving – marks the start of the holiday sale season in NYC, so you can pick up some fantastic bargains in the lead-up to Christmas. Christmas shopping on Fifth Avenue surely beats sitting in a jam at your local town centre multi storey car park. Remember to pack lightly for your outbound trip so you have plenty of space to bring home your new purchases! And if you’re shopping at department stores, it’s always worth asking if they offer special concessions for tourists. Macy’s, for instance, gives international shoppers vouchers for 10% off purchases.

New York

Get your skates on

Not quite sure whether you’re Torvill and Dean or Bambi on ice? Outdoor ice rinks pop up all around New York in the winter months, so now’s your chance to find out… Some of the better known rinks are in Midtown Manhattan including Central Park, Bryant Park and the Rockefeller Center.

New York

See a show

The bright lights of Broadway shine even brighter as the days get darker. Choose from best-selling shows such as The Lion King and The Book of Mormon, watch celebrities treading the boards – such as Bradley Cooper in The Elephant Man or Hugh Jackman in The River – or opt for a seasonal classic. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, starring the Rockettes, runs from 7th November to 31st December and New York City Ballet’s George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker runs from 28th November to 3rd January.

New York

Embrace the kitsch

Every year, New York stores compete for the most dazzling window displays and the city receives a tinsel and sparkles make-over. Remember, the whole holiday season leads up to one moment – the drop of a giant glitter ball on New Year’s Eve! Look out for gingerbread villages, holiday train shows, mechanical Santas and much more. To see how the real New Yorkers deck their halls for Christmas, head to Dyker Heights in Brooklyn, where the residents take their household Christmas decorations to the extreme.

Blogger Profile - Betty Peng

I grew up in Southern California near LA and spent most of my adult life in Northern California in San Francisco. (Oh believe me, there is a big difference between the two locations!) In my early twenties, I was very fond of road trips and have camped and climbed most of the National Parks in the western part of the United States. I have always been amazed by the dramatic change in scenery a few miles brings when driving throughout the U.S. There is always something remarkable around every corner! I recently moved to London and hope to continue my travel whims in Europe.
