Laguna Beach Holidays

You can trust an artist's eye, and it was a group of painters that first picked out Laguna Beach as a place worth preserving on canvas. Way back in the early 1900s they fell for its stunning seascape, complete with rolling surf, coastal canyons and glittering sands. The artists have stayed on, giving rise to a rash of galleries and some top-class art festivals; but they've also been joined by holidaymakers, surfers and others, all drawn by Laguna Beach's seductive mix of creativity and beach culture.

In fact there's more beach on Laguna Beach holidays than you can shake a paintbrush at, with seven miles of silken sands split into numerous different coves and stretches. Main Beach is at the centre of it all, and is the place to be if you're after good swimming, people watching, and some volleyball and basketball action. It's flanked by a boardwalk for strolling along, or if you're feeling more energetic you can walk up into Heisler Park for spectacular ocean views.

And there's plenty more beach besides, much of it hidden away in little coves you can only reach by descending steps down from the coastal road. The names say it all: 'One Thousand Steps Beach', 'Sleepy Hollow Beach' and  'Treasure Island Beach are just a few. But besides being places of beauty, these are beaches where you can get into whatever you're into: surfing; skimboarding; kayaking; tidepooling; seal spotting; or simply laying back on the sand and soaking up the California sun.

Back up in town, and there's much more to enjoy on Laguna Beach holidays. Great shopping comes in the shape of the boutiques and artisan shops along Forest Avenue. Plus there's over one hundred galleries to view, the Art Museum to visit, and some superb restaurants to sample. How will you fit it all in?

Crystal Cove

There's a chance to get away from it all at this State Park, which comes complete with seven separate coves stretching along more than 3 miles of beach, plus superb hiking and mountain biking through 2,400 unspoilt acres of the El Moro Backcountry. Out on the ocean there's good surfing and swimming, plus plenty to keep divers and snorkelers happy.

Festival of the Arts

California's top art show runs throughout July and August, and features 140 amazing artists working across a variety of media. See the artists at work, admire their output, and maybe even buy a souvenir. Also be amazed by the nightly Pageant of the Masters, when actors use props and lighting to recreate famous paintings as 'living' works of art.

Marine Life

There's ample opportunity to enjoy the Pacific's amazing wildlife - both above and below the waves. This whole stretch of coast is designated a State Marine Preserve, which means great diving and snorkeling, especially at Shaw's Cove's astonishing outer reef. On top of the water, look out for seals, sea lions and dolphins - even blue and grey whales.

Heisler Park

A stroll through Heisler Park is always a favourite on Laguna Beach holidays. Perched high above the beach, it offers fantastic views over the coast. Admire the park's beautiful sculptures, before sitting on a bench for some quiet contemplation with the ocean spread out before you.

Hunt For Treasure

Tidepooling is a way of life here, and there's no knowing what marine treasures you might find in the pools among the rocks once the tide retreats: anemones, starfish, hermit crabs and striped shore crabs are all possible - even the occasional octopus or sea cucumber. Shaw's Cove, Treasure Island, Picnic Beach and Crescent Bay are all top spots.
