What a Sport
If you like sports, there are plenty to choose from on holidays to the Central States, whether you want to cheer on the Kansas City Royals baseball team at the Kauffman Stadium, experience Formula One in Austin, watch American football at the AT&T stadium in Dallas or see the San Antonio Spurs clash with the Houston Rockets on the basketball pitch, there’s an event for you.
Watch the twice daily cattle drive pass through the streets of Fort Worth, spend a few days or more at a working ranch, catch a professional rodeo or gain an insight into Western history at the the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, boasting more than 28,000 Western and American Indian art works and artefacts.
There's something special about eating a big pile of brisket off a butcher-paper 'plate'. Kansas and Texas both boast the best BBQ joints but whatever place you choose to eat, the sizes are never small. In Oklahoma too, BBQ, fried chicken with white gravy, corn-on-the-cob, green beans and fried okra are also on the menu.
Strike up the Band
Get your toes tapping at some great music venues in the Central States. Choose from classic jazz in Kansas City’s 18th and Vine District, alternative vibes at Austin’s array of music festivals including South by Southwest, Texas Blues in San Antonio or classic Country and Western at Oklahoma City’s Centennial Rodeo Opry.
Big Bend National Park
The only National Park in this region of the USA, Big Bend covers 801,163 acres, making it larger than the entire state of Rhode Island. In this corner of Texas, the night skies are dark as tar and rivers carve temple-like canyons through ancient limestone. This is a landscape of amazing diversity and jaw-dropping beauty. It’s a must-see on any Central States itinerary.
