Top 5 Holiday picks for 2017

2017 is well underway, spring is fast approaching, the days are getting lighter and summer holiday dreams are at the forefront of our minds. With this in mind, we thought we’d seize the opportunity to look forward to the year ahead and uncover our top USA holiday picks for 2017...

Picking our top holiday destinations was no easy task. One person’s idea of the ultimate destination can differ somewhat from the next. It all comes down to what you want from a holiday of course, whether it’s getting back to nature and exploring the great outdoors or experiencing vibrant nightlife and a trendy food and drink scene. So with this in mind, we’ve handpicked some of our favourite and sometimes overlooked destinations, which we feel can offer something for just about anyone, here’s our 2017 top holiday picks…

Portland, Oregon

Portland is one of the USA's best kept secrets – a place with all the cultural advantages of a big city but with the feel of a small town. Known for its eco-credentials, 330 miles of bike paths, trendy craft beer breweries, a farm-to-table dining ethos and a flourishing arts & culture scene - Portland is definitely at the top of our 2017 list! And you know what makes it even better? The natural beauty that surrounds it! Portland is the gateway to Oregon's West Coast - think wild deserted beaches, small surf towns and towering rainforests and you’ll get a good idea of what to expect. But of course, seeing is believing and the best way to see Portland is a drive along The Pacific Coast Scenic Highway which traces 363 miles of spectacular coastline - an unusual and less travelled fly-drive for those outdoor explorers!

Another way to experience Portland’s great outdoors is heading west to Mount Hood which offers hiking and outdoor activities all year round with its conical slopes and great views over Portland and the Columbia Gorge. And if outdoor adventures are not your thing, you can head to The Winelands in the South of Oregon with its sweeping views, fertile volcanic soil and mild weather conditions, producing some of the best Pinot Noir in the world! Portland really does have something for everyone. And the best news? There has never been a better time to visit with new Delta Airlines direct flights starting May 2017!

Seattle, Washington

Of course, no trip to Portland would be complete without a visit to Seattle, a constantly evolving and forward thinking city which pushes boundaries and embraces new trends. Expect a vibrant & quirky coffee mecca, filled with tons of buzzing cafés & bars, cool buildings, hip neighbourhoods and some seriously stellar attractions! Seattle’s surreal arty side is something that really sets it aside from any other city; prepare yourself for all sorts of freakish displays, from rockets sticking out of shoe shops to the intergalactic Rainer Tower towering high on the incredible Seattle skyline.

But not all Seattle's attractions are man-made, since its surrounding natural beauty is nothing short of spectacular. The abundance of green land and blue water makes for some fantastic outdoor activities and the views are simply breathtaking - it’s not called the Emerald City for nothing! Its difficult to explain Seattle and you’ll never fully understand it until you experience it for yourself.

Oakland's cosmopolitan city is made up of a patchwork of interesting and self-sufficient neighbourhoods, where chickens are raised in back gardens and community allotments are in abundance. Visitors can find a little of everything in this diverse metropolis - Oakland is both historic and modern, vibrant and calm, trendy and traditional. From the scenic waterfront, to the sweeping hill views, Oakland was just built for exploring!

The profusion of wide open spaces and outdoor activities mean there’s plenty of room for kicking back on Oakland holidays, from hiking and biking to alfresco dining in Jack London Square! And if outdoor adventures are not your thing, there are lots of bustling districts to discover, each with their own thriving arts and culinary scene. From restored Victorian buildings and upscale boutiques in Rockridge, to hanging with the hipsters in Telegraph Avenue's cafés and bars. One of the best things about the Bay Area is the rapid transport system, meaning you can be enjoying breakfast in Oakland one minute and walking the streets of San Francisco 15 minutes later! And the new British Airways direct flights starting in March 2017 means that you can be there even quicker - California’s west coast has never been more accessible!
