Holidays in Atlanta

Atlanta holidays will have you buzzing with excitement. The capital of the New South does modern glitz superbly well: not only dazzling skyscrapers and cutting-edge restaurants, but some fabulous attractions too - the biggest aquarium in the world for starters, plus tours behind the scenes at 24-hour news giant CNN,  and more flavours of Coke to taste than you ever dreamed existed at the World Of Coca-Cola. There's also fantastic shopping and a great bar and club scene.

But it's not all about the new here, because there's plenty of history to discover too. Atlanta is the home town and final resting place of Martin Luther King, so there's lots of fascinating civil rights  sites to explore. It's also the city in which Margaret Mitchell wrote the old Southern classic Gone With The Wind, and you'll find her former home in Midtown - plus there's antebellum treasures and Civil War history aplenty in  towns like Marietta, Kennesaw and Roswell, just outside the city.

Atlanta has some top open spaces, and Piedpont Park is great for strolling and people watching, as well as being home to the Atlanta Botanical Garden. It's stunning at any time of year, but especially at Christmas, when it twinkles with thousands of lights. Centennial Park is the lasting legacy of the 1996 Olympics and has fantastic views of the city skyline plus 251 fountains that shoot water into the air in the shape of the Olympic Rings. Kids love cooling off among them on hot summer days.

There's plenty more for kids too, with the gorillas, giraffes and giant pandas at Zoo Atlanta always proving a hit. What you'll discover is that Atlanta holidays are the perfect mix of modern attractions, fascinating history and a traditional warm Southern welcome.

Georgia Aquarium

Georgia AquariamThis is the biggest aquarium on the planet, with over 100,000 animals in total - and it's a must on Atlanta holidays. There's lots of different marine environments to discover, from icy waters to tropical - plus you can meet, touch and feed dolphins, sea otters and penguins; swim with whale sharks; and have a close-up encounter with a beluga whale.

Southern Shopping

From boutiques to art galleries, antique and outlet centres, Atlanta shopping is everywhere. Venture into Buckhead for a luxurious shopping experience featuring top brands at Simon Shopping Destinations’ Lenox Square Mall or discover the hottest boutiques in neighbourhood shopping districts, from Midtown and Virginia Highland to funky vintage finds in Little Five Points, or visit out-of-town North Georgia Premium Outlets for fabulous designer outlet shopping.

Stone Mountain Park

It's well worth making the trip up Stone Mountain for the views from the top - and to see the carved reliefs of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and Generals Lee and Jackson.  This is the world's largest piece of exposed granite, and you can either hike up or take the Skyride cablecar. There's also a spectacular laser show.

Share The Dream

Civil rights leader Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta, and you can tour the home where he lived in 'Sweet Auburn', as well as the Ebenezer Baptist Church where he preached alongside his father. Also part of this National Historic Site are the tomb where both Martin Luther King and his wife are buried, plus the King Centre for the advancement of civil rights.

Coke It Is!

Fans of fizz will want to visit the home of Coca-Cola. You can see a huge amount of Coke memorabilia as well as the vault where the secret recipe is kept; taste over 100 Coca-Cola drinks from around the world; and take home your very own commemorative bottle.
