Hawaii, Big Island Holidays

Hawaii's Big Island is certainly big on beauty. From bubbling volcanoes and towering peaks, to lush tropical forests and eerily green sand, this is a place brimful of wonders. Which other island on the planet can boast 11 of Earth's 13 climate zones? Mother Nature puts on a spectacular show in this particular corner of the Pacific Ocean and you'll see sights on a Big Island vacation that you'll never forget.

There's not many places on Earth where you can lie back on a beach in the morning and watch the fireworks provided by an active volcano by night. This is an island full of contrasts, where you'll discover yet another stunning spectacle around every corner - whether it's a waterfall plunging over dramatic cliffs on the Hamakua Coast, or ancient teeth-baring idols guarding the temples at Pu'uhonua O Honaunau.

The ghostly moonscape of the Hawaii Volcano State Park comes top of the list of must-sees for many visitors. And Big Island lives up to its name again here, with three outstanding sights: the world's biggest volcano, Mauna Loa; the world's biggest mountain, Mauna Kea, which when measured from its base deep in the ocean to its peak is over twice the size of Everest;  and the world's most active volcano, Kilauea, which has been spewing lava since 1983.

Plus there are plenty of other things that make a Big Island holiday so special. Plant lovers will be blown away by the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden - a riot of more than 2,500 stunning species. Fans of marine life will get a buzz from fantastic snorkeling, diving and whale-spotting. And coffee fans can explore the Kona district, to tour coffee plantations and sample the local brew. If it's big fun you're after, Big Island is the place to be..

Volcanic Action

Big Island VolcanoThere's plenty going on in Volcano State Park. You can drive an 11-mile road round the crater rim; spot steam belching from active vents; hike the  trails that snake through volcanic craters, scalded deserts and lush rainforests; walk through a 500 year-old lava cave; and watch molten lava pouring into the sea in a shower of sparks and smoke.

Beautiful Beaches

Variety is the watchword here. A crescent of golden sand, shallow blue water and great body surfing and boogie barding is the order of the day at Hapuna. Picturesque Lelewei has palm-fringed black-lava tide pools, fed by freshwater springs; Punaluu has black sand and swaying coconut palms; and the sand at Papakolea Beach is tinged green by crushed olivine, a semiprecious mineral.

Waipi'o Valley

The 'Valley of the Kings' is tops for dramatic tropical beauty, with towering cliffs, lush vegetation, meandering rivers and crashing waterfalls - including Hiilawe Falls, the island's tallest. You can explore its wonders either on foot or on horseback, plus there's a black sand beach where the Valley meets the ocean. For stupendous views, hike the switchbacks of the Muliwai Trail.

Beneath The Waves

There's incredible snorkelling and diving on a Big Island vacation - even 'hot lava dives', where you can watch molten lava sink into the ocean. For beginners, the clear shallow waters of Kahaluu Beach Park are perfect. Spot green sea turtles, multi-hued corals, rays, dolphins, octopuses and all manner of brightly coloured tropical fish.

See the Stars

The elevation and lack of light pollution means the summit of Mauna Kea is perfect for star gazing - so much so that 11 nations have set up telescopes here. Stare into the heavens and see the dense darkness illuminated by millions of glittering jewels.

You’re going to need an ESTA!
For anyone travelling to the USA, the US authorities have imposed a requirement for passengers travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), to register for Electronic Travel Authority. Passengers who have not applied for and received travel authorisation via ESTA prior to travel could be denied boarding of the plane or be refused admission at the US entry destination. However, neither possession of a visa, nor meeting the basic requirements for travelling visa-free on the VWP, guarantees admission to the United States. As with most countries, the final determination of admissibility is made by immigration officials at the port of entry.

How do I apply for ESTA?
Just fill in the online application form which you can find at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Before you travel, you will need to visit this website and fill in the form.

When is best to apply for my travel authorisation?
You will need to apply for entry via ESTA at least a minimum of 72 hours prior to travel if you intend to travel to America.

How long is the travel authorisation valid for?
Your ESTA will be valid for up to two years, or until your passport expires. It is also valid for multiple entries to America. However you must amend any necessary data, such as date of travel and your address whilst in the US.
