Waimea Canyon

Hawaii's very own Grand Canyon is a must-see on holidays to Kauai. Nearly 1,067 metres deep, a mile wide and ten miles long, this great chasm is the result of an ancient earthquake that nearly split the island in two. With the Waimea River snaking along the canyon floor, stupendous panoramas are the order of the day from the top - or hike down one of the trails for a close-up view.
Na Pali Coast
Get to see the island's dramatically beautiful north-west coast, inaccessible by car, whichever way you can - whether by boat or by helicopter. Anyone up to the challenge can walk part of the Kalalua Trail, which snakes for 11 miles alongside soaring coastal cliffs and gorgeous valleys from Ke'e Beach to Kalalau Beach. 'Stunning' doesn't even half way describe it.
Get Active
Holidays to Kauai are perfect for those who don't like to sit still too long. Besides great hiking and kayaking, there's the chance to learn to surf the Pacific swell at one of the island's easy-going surf schools. Plus there's fabulous diving and snorkelling; water-skiing; deep-sea fishing; zip lines; and 'tubing' down the flumes of the old sugar plantations.
Hanalei Bay
One of the stars of the island's laid-back north coast is this beautiful bay, with a two-mile crescent of sand set against a dazzling green backdrop of misty mountains and waterfalls. Hanalei town itself is a charming little enclave with historic buildings, interesting galleries, and ukulele concerts in the community centre. There's even a pier.
Gorgeous Gardens
Three of Hawaii's five National Tropical Botanical Gardens are here on the 'The Garden Isle. The McBryde Garden has the largest collection of native Hawaiian flora in the world; Allerton Gardens comes with amazing landscaping and giant Moreton Figs; and Limahuli Gardens concentrates on endangered plants.
