Holidays to Kauai

Known as 'The Garden Isle', Kauai's emerald green  landscape is a riot of verdant valleys, plunging waterfalls and lush tropical vegetation. But that only tells half the story for this picture-postcard island. Elsewhere stunning gorges and stupendous coastal cliffs provide for some jaw-dropping scenery - and the sun shines warmly on mile upon mile of gorgeous sandy beaches.

Seeing the sights on holidays to Kauai is a breeze, since this is the smallest of Hawaii's four main islands. There's plenty of scenic spots you can drive to, like the Hanalei Valley Overlook, with its incredible view of taro fields and shimmering waterfalls set against a backdrop of jagged mountains; also the Kilauea Lighthouse, with a panoramic sweep of the North Shore's dramatic coastline, and a chance of spotting humpback whales.

But there are other ways of getting to know Kauai. No other major Hawaiian island has navigable rivers, and a trip by kayak or boat along the Wailua River, past waterfalls and lava caves amid lush jungle landscapes, is like a journey into another world. This is a great place for hikers too, with dozens of fabulous routes to choose from, and the Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast, taking in sheer cliffs, secluded valleys and tropical wildlife, is an island highlight.

Kauai also does brilliant beaches, so if your idea of heaven is to lie back on white sands, swim in clear warm waters, or try out some watersports, you're in the right place. The island has over 50 miles of beaches to pick from, and there's a stretch that's right for everyone: children snorkel safely in the lagoon at Anini Beach Park;  boarders battle the surf at Kalapaki; and Hawaiian monk seals pop up to say hello at Poipu. Why not say 'Aloha' to Kauai yourself?.

Waimea Canyon

Waimea CanyonHawaii's very own Grand Canyon is a must-see on holidays to Kauai. Nearly 1,067 metres deep, a mile wide and ten miles long, this great chasm is the result of an ancient earthquake that nearly split the island in two. With the Waimea River snaking along the canyon floor, stupendous panoramas are the order of the day from the top - or hike down one of the trails for a close-up view.

Na Pali Coast

Get to see the island's dramatically beautiful north-west coast, inaccessible by car, whichever way you can - whether by boat or by helicopter. Anyone up to the challenge can walk part of the Kalalua Trail, which snakes for 11 miles alongside soaring coastal cliffs and gorgeous valleys from Ke'e Beach to Kalalau Beach. 'Stunning' doesn't even half way describe it.

Get Active

Holidays to Kauai are perfect for those who don't like to sit still too long. Besides great hiking and kayaking, there's the chance to learn to surf the Pacific swell at one of the island's easy-going surf schools. Plus there's fabulous diving and snorkelling; water-skiing; deep-sea fishing; zip lines; and 'tubing' down the flumes of the old sugar plantations.

Hanalei Bay

One of the stars of the island's laid-back north coast is this beautiful bay, with a two-mile crescent of sand set against a dazzling green backdrop of misty mountains and waterfalls. Hanalei town itself is a charming little enclave with historic buildings, interesting galleries, and ukulele concerts in the community centre. There's even a pier.

Gorgeous Gardens

Three of Hawaii's five National Tropical Botanical Gardens are here on the 'The Garden Isle. The McBryde Garden has the largest collection of native Hawaiian flora in the world; Allerton Gardens comes with amazing landscaping and giant Moreton Figs; and Limahuli Gardens concentrates on endangered plants.

Any passengers who have not made an application for and received their travel authorisation via ESTA before travelling may not be permitted to board the aircraft or could be denied admission at the US entry destination. But of course, neither possession of a visa, nor meeting the basic requirements for travelling visa-free on the VWP will guarantee a passenger admission to the United States. The final determination of admissibility is made by the immigration office at the port of entry.

Where can I apply for ESTA?
Prior to travel, you will need to visit https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov. and fill out an online application form.

When should I apply?
This will need to be applied for at least 72 hours prior to travel if you intend to travel to America.

How long is my ESTA valid for?
Your ESTA will be valid for up to two years, or until your passport expires. It is also possible for you to use for multiple entries to America. Just be sure to amend any necessary data, such as date of travel and your address whilst in the US.
