Holidays to Maui

The locals here insist Maui no ka oi - 'Maui is the best'. And once you've spent time on Hawaii's gorgeous second-largest island,  we think you'll agree. Known fondly as the 'Valley Isle', this is a place of staggering natural beauty, blessed with towering volcanoes, cascading waterfalls, lush rainforests and superb beaches - all surrounded by the warm cobalt waters of the Pacific Ocean. One other thing the locals forgot to mention is that they'll give you the warmest of welcomes, too.

Maui's centrepiece is the Haleakala volcano (thankfully dormant!), its lofty peak rising to over 3,000 metres. A trip up to the top to catch the sunrise is one of the quintessential island experiences, and as the first streaks of sunlight flash over the horizon, you'll see a sight you'll never forget. With the sky turning from inky black through charcoal to violet, the surreal spectacle of the crater's moonscape emerges from the gloom, revealing Mother Nature in all her glory.

There are endless other dazzling sights on holidays to Maui, too - from volcanic cones and multi-coloured rainbow eucalyptus trees, to panoramic views over the  coastline. Many of the beaches that speckle the island  are just perfect for sinking back into pristine white sand and swimming in soothing waters - Kaanapali is a favourite. Others are superb for snorkelling, while there's surfing at Laihana, and Hookipa is a world-class windsurfing destination. Like black sand? Then head for stunning Waianapanapa.

Plus there's more to enjoy: historic whaling towns, ranch country, wineries, resorts, even a lavender farm...not to mention hiking through stupendously beautiful secluded valleys. Legend has it that a Polynesian demigod, having plucked all the Hawaiian islands up out of the sea, decided to make Maui, the most beautiful one, his home. Who could blame him?.

Whale Watching

Maui Whale WatchingHolidays to Maui provide the perfect opportunity to see majestic humpback whales as they spend time in the warm Hawaiian waters after their 3000 mile swim from the North Pacific. Boat and canoe trips from Lahaina are the best way to get up close to these astonishing animals - or you can try shore-based spotting from McGregor Point and Puu Olai.

Haleakala National Park

Once you've watched the sunrise, it's time to explore the volcano's massive crater - the biggest in the world. You can either hike or ride horseback down its sloping sides - plus there are other hiking trails snaking all over the Park to explore. Once you're ready to go home you can even ride a bike downhill for 23 miles all the way back through fantastic scenery.

Lahaina

This charming historic whaling village is now a buzzy little town filled with art galleries, shops and restaurants. On Front Street you can tour buildings from yesteryear, including the U.S. Seamen’s Hospital, Hale Paaho (Lahaina Prison) and the Pioneer Inn - or you can catch the acclaimed Ulalena show at Maui Theatre, telling the history of Hawaii through spectacular dance and music.

Road to Hana

Drive the road to secluded Hana, complete with hairpin turns and narrow one-lane bridges, for one of the most spectacular trips of a life-time and stupendous island views. Take it slow and stop off regularly to experience lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, cooling plunge pools and dramatic seascapes.

Underwater Adventures

There's a whole other world to explore beneath the waves on holiday to Maui, complete with brightly coloured fish, eels, octopuses, dolphins and green sea turtles. Two of the best spots for snorkelling are Molokini Crater and Honolua Bay. Diving is also available for those who dare to go deeper.

Don’t forget your ESTA
If you are travelling to the USA, the US authorities have imposed a requirement for passengers travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), to register for Electronic Travel Authority. Passengers who have not applied for and received travel authorisation via ESTA prior to travel may be denied boarding of the aircraft or be denied admission at the US entry destination. However, neither possession of a visa, nor meeting the basic requirements for travelling visa-free on the VWP, guarantees admission to the United States. As with most countries, the final determination of admissibility is made by immigration officials at the port of entry.

How do I apply for ESTA?
There is an application form online which is available at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Prior to travel, you will need to visit this website and fill in the online application.

When should I apply for my travel authorisation?
If you intend to travel to America, you must apply for entry via ESTA at least a minimum of 72 hours prior to travel.

How long is the travel authorisation valid for?
Your ESTA will be valid for up to two years, or until your passport expires. It is also valid for multiple entries to America. However you must amend any necessary data, such as date of travel and your address whilst in the US.
