Holidays to Waikiki, Honolulu

With a name as exotic as its location, Waikiki is the beating heart of Hawaii's beautiful Oahu island. Perched picturesquely on the south shore and ringed by volcanic craters, it's a cosmopolitan mix of glitzy hi-rises, quirky neighbourhoods, great shopping, plus fantastic restaurants and night-life. Oh, and did we mention the beach? The local stretch of sand is Waikiki - one of the most famous beaches in the world.

You really do get the best of both worlds on holidays to Waikiki - all the buzz of the city, and the soft sand of Waikiki Beach just a couple of miles along the shore. It's the perfect place to while away the day, whether you're into sun bathing and people watching, or something more energetic. Slip into the warm turquoise waters for a surf lesson, or try your hand at the Hawaiian sport of canoe paddling (think Hawaii Five-0). Then relax with a Mai Tai at a beachfront bar as the sun goes down.

There's plenty more to Waikiki than beach culture though. Culture of a different kind comes in the shape of the Bishop Museum, set up in 1889 by a royal princess, and today offering a fascinating interactive exploration of Hawaiian history and culture. Plus there's the Pearl Harbour memorial to discover, while the only royal palace in the USA is also worth a visit. Ornate colonnaded Iolani Palace was home to Hawaii's last two rulers.

Shopping is always a winner here, if you can tear yourself away from everything else; so whether you're sourcing Hawaii exclusives like Tori Richard and HIC Surf, browsing the international brands and department stores of the malls, or buying a fresh flower lei in Chinatown, you're bound to come up trumps.

Plus there's the rest of the island to explore, too. Waikiki is just the start.....

Hanauma Bay

Holidays to Waikiki come complete with a tropical underwater paradise - and the calm, shallow waters of nearby Hanauma Bay are the best place to discover it. Strap on a mask and gasp in wonder as multicoloured marine life of every shape and size wafts past: parrot fish, trigger fish, moray eels, green turtles and much, much more.

Pearl Harbour

The events of 7 December 1941, when the US Pacific fleet was destroyed at Pearl Harbour catapulting America into World War Two, are ingrained in history. Visit the moving memorial to the 2,400 people who died that day and stand on a platform above the sunken wreck of the USS Arizona. Also visit the intact battleship USS Missouri and a WW2 submarine.

Further Afield

There's so much more to Oahu than just Honolulu and Waikiki - and it's all within easy striking distance. Drive the hour or so to the North shore to sample a quieter side of the island, where long-held traditions hold firm and some of the best surfers in the world battle monster waves. Or travel up Oahu's windward side for spectacular views over the craggy coast.

Diamond Head

A trip to Diamond Head is a traditional part of all holidays to Hawaii. The volcanic crater that looms large at the end of Waikiki Beach sits 232 metres above the shore and offers spectacular panoramic views back across Waikiki and Honolulu.

After Sunset

Foodies will quickly take to Honolulu's restaurants, serving up everything from high-end Pacific Rim cuisine to fried pork chops; and nightbirds will love the city's night-life. Head to Chinatown for hip bars and a cutting-edge underground scene; sip cocktails or listen to live music by the ocean at Waikiki Beach; or hit the buzzing clubs of Downtown.

You’re going to need an ESTA!
For anyone travelling to the USA, the US authorities have imposed a requirement for passengers travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), to register for Electronic Travel Authority. Passengers who have not applied for and received travel authorisation via ESTA prior to travel could be denied boarding of the plane or be refused admission at the US entry destination. However, neither possession of a visa, nor meeting the basic requirements for travelling visa-free on the VWP, guarantees admission to the United States. As with most countries, the final determination of admissibility is made by immigration officials at the port of entry.

How do I apply for ESTA?
Just fill in the online application form which you can find at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Before you travel, you will need to visit this website and fill in the form.

When is best to apply for my travel authorisation?
You will need to apply for entry via ESTA at least a minimum of 72 hours prior to travel if you intend to travel to America.

How long is the travel authorisation valid for?
Your ESTA will be valid for up to two years, or until your passport expires. It is also valid for multiple entries to America. However you must amend any necessary data, such as date of travel and your address whilst in the US.
