Holidays to Arkansas

What do the largest collection of presidential papers and artifacts in US history, Johnny Cash’s childhood home, Elvis Presley’s barber, Gilded Age bath houses and the world’s only public diamond mine have in common? They can all be found in Arkansas. The Natural State has an abundance of natural wonders, home grown heroes, history other surprises to suit every taste and passion.

Fans of the Man in Black shouldn’t miss the Delta boyhood home of Johnny Cash and music buffs in general will want to travel the Rock ‘n’ Roll Highway to Walnut Ridge. The Beatles made a stop there in 1964, and the Fab Four, amongst many others, are honoured on the Guitar Walk. Those interested in US presidential history—and of the 42nd president in particular —will enjoy a “Billgrimage” to three sites (and three distinct geographical regions of the state); the Clinton Presidential Center, the Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site, and the Clinton House Museum.

To feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair, explore state and national parks or cruise Arkansas’s motorcycling routes and mountain-biking trails. Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro is the only producing public diamond mine in the world, and diggers keep what they find—including a recent 8.52-carat discovery. Baseball, bathhouses and bandits can all be found at nearby Hot Springs National Park; the Buffalo National River, with its iconic bluffs, is a popular spot for camping and canoeing. And if you’ve got a need for speed, Arkansas has some of the top-rated motorcycle routes in the US, as well as five IMBA Epic Rides.

Nature-lovers, history buffs, music aficionados, and thrill-seekers will have a hard time exhausting the experiences Arkansas has to offer—and each one is served up with that special brand of Southern hospitality that keeps visitors coming back again and again.

Music

Guests from all over the world flock to Johnny Cash’s Boyhood Home in Dyess. You can also enjoy the rich music culture along the Rock ‘n’ Roll Highway 67 in Walnut Ridge. View a life-sized sculpture of the Beatles as they appear on the cover of the Abbey Road album and visit the Guitar Walk, a 115-foot-long by 40-foot-wide guitar honouring musicians such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Conway Twitty and more who played along the historic Highway 67. Fort Chaffee Barbershop Museum, Fort Smith, is where Elvis Presley received his famous first G.I. haircut.

Motorcycle Routes

When it comes to the top motorcycle rides in the United States, Arkansas is officially on the map. On every rider’s bucket list should be the Pig Trail Scenic Byway/AR 23, named one of USA Today “Readers’ Choice 10 Best Motorcycle Trips in the United States.” Biker-friendly towns offer great food, art, culture and history around every bend. Come and enjoy Arkansas on two wheels!

Hot Springs

Incorporated January 10, 1851, Hot Springs has a rich history and has been home to Major League Baseball spring training, illegal gambling, speakeasies, visiting gangsters such as Al Capone, the Army and Navy Hospital, and 42nd U.S. President Bill Clinton. Along with a national park, the city is also home to attractions like Oaklawn Park (the only Thoroughbred horse racing venue in Arkansas), the Hot Springs Baseball Trail, art galleries, state parks, lakes, and much more.

National Parks, Forests and Rivers

There are 2.9 million acres of National Forest and no less than 52 state parks in Arkansas. Hot Springs National Park is the oldest unit within the National Park System. There are numerous hiking trails and camping areas. The highlight is one of the grandest collections of bathhouses in North America, including many outstanding examples of Gilded Age architecture. The Buffalo National River, located in northern Arkansas, was the first National River to be designated in the United States and is a popular camping, canoeing and fishing destination. Ouachita is a stunning wilderness area and the oldest National Forest in the USA.

Crater of Diamonds State Park- Murfreesboro, Arkansas

Crater of Diamonds State Park offers park visitors a one-of-a-kind experience—the adventure of hunting for real diamonds. You’ll search over a 37 ½-acre plowed field that is the eroded surface of the world's eighth largest diamond-bearing volcanic crater. If you find a diamond, it is yours to keep. This is the world's only diamond-bearing site accessible to the public. Crater of Diamonds is located around sixty miles from Hot Springs National Park.

President William Jefferson Clinton

Clinton Presidential Center, Little Rock, is one of twelve presidential libraries in the United States and features a replica of the Oval Office. Clinton Birthplace Home National Historic Site, Hope, is where the president spent the first four years of his life. The park visitor centre includes exhibits about President Clinton's early life. Admission is free. In Fayetteville, the Clinton House Museum was the first home of Bill and Hillary Clinton while they both taught at the University of Arkansas School of Law. They were married at the home in 1975.
