The Rockies

If you want to go back to the days of the American Frontier on your USA holiday, then the Rockies region is the destination for you. This is where Lewis and Clark 'discovered' the west, where Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane once rode the trails and where Custer met his last stand against Crazy Horse at the Battle of Little Bighorn. This is a land of big skies, epic landscapes, working cowboys and roaming buffalo. Welcome to the Real America.

Holidays in the Rockies are all about rest and rejuvenation, whether you want to explore the USA’s least populated state (Wyoming), relax in a hot spring under the stars or get your adrenalin pumping with an outdoor adventure, there’s a whole host of ways to explore the great outdoors. And the outdoors here really is great, with the geothermal wonders of Yellowstone, the surreal landscape of Badlands of the Dakotas and the soaring mountains of Glacier National Park just a few of the popular attractions.

Most European settlers moved to this region to herd cattle or in search of gold and silver. Apart from Denver, Colorado, you won’t find large conurbations here but you will find old mining towns where time has stood still. Saddle up at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in Jackson, Wyoming, spend time getting to grips with ranch life at a working or guest ranch or see first-hand the wealth created by mining at the Copper Kings Mansion in Butte, Montana.

More than anything, it’s the natural wonders of the Rockies that bring millions of visitors each year. The National Parks alone offer everything from dramatic peaks and canyons to striking buttes and ancient cliff-dwellings. You’ll get to see bears, bison, elk, moose, and mountain goats in their natural habitat, have the chance to hike, mountain bike, climb, ski and raft in fantastic surroundings and be rewarded at the end of the day with some of the most spectacular night skies on the planet.

Yellowstone

The first national park in the USA and possibly in the world, Yellowstone National Park draws over 2 million visitors every year, who come to see 3,468 square miles of geothermal features, canyons, lakes, rivers and pasture dotted with wild bison. The park also offers the opportunity to see elk, wolves, mountain lions along with grizzly and black bears and hundreds of other animal species.

Authentic Ranches

The Rockies area of the USA boasts some of the best ranches around in terms of fantastic scenery, authentic cowboy experiences and western hospitality. You can choose to stay in a working ranch (like Black Leg Ranch in McKenzie, North Dakota) where you get involved in daily tasks, a guest ranch (like the Rocking Z Ranch near Wolf Creek, Montana) where you live with the ranch owners, a dude ranch (like the High Country Guest Ranch in South Dakota) or a Resort Ranch (like the former US Cavalry post, now Paradise Guest Ranch, Wyoming). See our full range of ranch accommodation here.

Wild West Towns

For rootin’-tootin’ Old West towns, you’ll be hard-pressed to beat the historic districts of the Rockies. How about watching a shoot em’ up in downtown Deadwood? Or experience the frozen-in-time old capital of Montana Territory – Virginia City, which was once the home of Calamity Jane and is now a National Historic Landmark. There are plenty of old mining towns to discover.

Mount Rushmore

Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2016, Mount Rushmore has become one of the stand-out landmarks that epitomise the USA. The monument, in the Black Hills near Keystone, South Dakota depicts 60-foot high sculptures of the heads of Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt. Around 17 miles away, the Crazy Horse Memorial is just as iconic.

Epic Landscapes

Along with Yellowstone, the Rockies encompass nine National Parks offering landscapes from soaring mountains to hot springs and huge sand dunes. There are also historic sites and trails, recreation areas, national forests and monuments, all with opportunities for outdoor pursuits. If you like your views to be epic, this is the right place to come.
