The Las Vegas Strip

The Strip Las Vegas never stops. The very life and soul of the city, it's a place that keeps going 24 hours a day. There are loved-up couples ducking into wedding chapels. Poker players taking a breather before heading back inside for the next hand. Street performers and living statues entertaining the passers-by. And everywhere, visitors gazing in awe at the stupendous architecture of the big hotels.

These hotels aren't just a place for tourists to lay their head - they're complete destinations in themselves. Outside the Tuscan-themed Bellagio, fountains of water shoot 140 metres into the air, in time to a spectacular music and lights show. At the Venetian, you can drift lazily along the Grand Canal in a gondola. And you can even get a slice of East Coast action at New York-New York, where a giant Statue of Liberty looms large over the hotel's white knuckle rollercoaster.

As the Nevada sun blazes down in summer-time, you might want to take the plunge with one of Vegas' latest vogues - pool parties, complete with resident DJs, mega sound systems and custom lasers. And whatever the season, there's never a bad time to spend a few hours in a casino, trying your luck on the slots or watching the roulette wheel spin at the gaming tables. Win or lose, it's an essential part of the Las Vegas experience.

There's shopping to fit in, too. With a gob-smacking array of stores and malls to choose from, you could be taking anything from designer labels to a showgirl-style feather headdress back as a souvenir. Plus there's plenty of entertainment on offer as well - take your pick from amusement parks, night clubs, top-class restaurants, happening bars and all-star shows. The only problem you'll have is finding time to sleep.

Go Stratospheric

Stratosphere towerTake your courage in both hands and try the rides at the top of the Stratosphere Tower. The Big Shot has you shooting up the Tower's needle then plummeting down quicker than a stone; Insanity sees riders spinning round the top of the building; while Sky Jump Las Vegas is a vertical zip-line free fall from the 108th floor.

Put A Ring On It

Follow in the steps of Elvis and Angelina Jolie and get hitched Vegas style. There's chapels all over the city and you can either choose a theme (zombie wedding anyone?) or go a straighter route. If you're in a hurry, opt for the Little White Wedding Chapel with its Drive-Thru Tunnel of Vows.

All About Animals

There's wildlife aplenty in Vegas, making it a top spot for animal lovers. Siegfried and Roys' Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat provides a rare chance to spot black panthers, white tigers, white lions, and other big cats. Or if underwater action floats your boat, there's the Shark Reef aquarium at the Mandalay Bay.

Showtime!

The Strip Las Vegas is THE place for razzmatazz, so be sure to catch a show whilst you're here. If it's big-time Broadway you're after, then both Jersey Boys and Book of Mormon will be in town in 2014. Plus don't miss Cirque du Soleil, the Blue Man Group, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, David Copperfield, Gordie Brown...the list goes on.

Retail Therapy

So many shops, so little time. Shopping in Vegas ranges from the sublime to the ridiculous - everything from Christian Dior to kitsch Elvis memorabilia. The Roman-themed Forum arcade at Caesar's Palace is not to be missed - and if you want shopping on a vast scale, head to the Fashion Show mall, which even has its own catwalk.
