Minnesota Holidays

Known by the Dakota Indians as Mnisota Makace – ‘water that reflects the sky’, Minnesota is the Land of 10,000 Lakes, continental America’s northernmost state, with an enthralling blend of unspoilt wilderness and urban culture. Add to that Minnesotans’ famed friendliness (known affectionately as Minnesota Nice), delivered with a unique, Scandinavian flavoured accent and you have all the ingredients for a fantastic holiday destination.

In truth, there are actually 11,842 lakes in Minnesota as well as 66 state parks, 58 state forests, one national forest and one water-based National Park - Voyageurs! It’s not surprising that Minnesota is known for its natural beauty. You can sail on the world’s largest lake – Lake Superior or even cross the Mississippi River at its source in Itasca State Park. The state also boasts more than 1,400 designated wildlife areas so if you venture out, you’re likely to spot native species such as loons, bald eagles, moose or bears.

If your tastes are more urban, then head for the Twin Cities where you’ll find museums, galleries, theatre and fine dining. For sports lovers, the cities boast some leading teams including the Minnesota Twins baseball, the Timberwolves basketball and the Vikings football teams. Nearby Bloomington is home to the world famous Mall of America, the nation’s largest indoor shopping centre or why not pay a visit to Duluth, a historic port and one of the most picturesque city destinations in the Midwest?

Talking of tastes, Minnesota chefs serve up an eclectic array of dishes from international cuisine to regional favourites, using ingredients from local farms. Craft brewing is a booming industry here too and Minnesota wines consistently win awards on the international stage. So, whether you’re looking for spectacular wilderness, world-class concerts, water sports, retail therapy, fine food or festivals, this state has something for you.

Will you have a great time on your holiday to Minnesota? Oh yah, you betcha!

The Twin Cities

The neighbouring cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul between them offer an exciting arts and music scene, exceptional shopping, award-winning restaurants, wineries and craft breweries. Outdoor enthusiasts find plenty to do – even when temperatures dip, the variety of fun outdoor adventures does not! Sports fans cheer on their favourite teams year-around, and there's not a weekend goes by without a cultural event or special activity going on somewhere.

Voyageurs National Park

Experience the life of a voyageur, the French-Canadian fur traders who once travelled through this region when you navigate a canoe through Voyageurs National Park. This water bound park is also popular with kayakers and fishermen, with most of its land area only accessible by boat. There are plenty of guided boat tours available including sunset and wildlife watching cruises. Here you can also see and touch rocks half as old as the world, immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of a boreal forest or catch a dazzling night sky.

If your favourite place is on the fairway, you’ll be spoilt for choice on Minnesota holidays, with over 500 courses to choose from, including the world renowned Brainerd Lakes Golf Trail and the Wilderness at Fortune Bay. The Ryder Cup is scheduled to arrive in the state in 2016 and will be held at the stunning Hazeltine National Golf Club.

Each May, Bob Dylan fans make their way to his home town of Hibbing to mark Dylan Days. This four-day event includes song writing contests, artists’ demonstrations and concerts. For country music enthusiasts, WE Fest in Detroit Lakes is one of America’s largest outdoor country music festivals. And for fans of Irish dancing, St Paul’s Irish Day of Dance in March features local schools of Irish dance, music and food.

Mall of America

This is the big one, the largest indoor shopping centre in the USA with more than 500 stores to tempt you (including a huge Lego shop) in a retail area covering a staggering 2,500,000 sq ft. There are also the usual extras like food courts, cinemas, an aquarium and of course, an indoor theme park, so the kids will love it here too!
