Day 1: Los Angeles - Santa Margarita (approx. 215 miles)
Collect your motorhome, get yourself comfortable, and then head north along the American Riviera through chic Santa Barbara, with its golden sand beaches, rolling surf and boutique shopping. Head for sleepy, artisan Santa Margarita. Recommended stay - Santa Margarita Campground, a nature lover's paradise just a quarter-mile from tranquil Santa Margarita Lake.
Day 2: Santa Margarita - San Simeon (approx. 55 miles)
Continue along Highway 1 through rolling wine country to San Luis Obispo, with its 18th century Mission and farmer's market. Next stop is the low-key coastal town of San Simeon, in time for a visit to the town's major claim to fame - Hearst Castle. It's a mind-boggling 122-acre estate complete with a hundred-room mansion where architectural flights of fancy rule the day and every space oozes opulence. Recommended stay - San Simeon Creek Campground, perfect for hiking, fishing, surfing, beachcombing, and whale watching.
Day 3-4: San Simeon - San Francisco (approx. 232 miles)
Keep heading north from San Simeon, hugging the coast for some spectacularly scenic stretches where the Pacific spray flies and craggy sea cliffs drop straight into the ocean. Motor past Big Sur and find time to stop in charming Carmel-by-the-Sea, with its string of galleries, boutiques and restaurants. Make sure you also park up in Monterey for some sea lion-spotting, surfing and fresh seafood, before continuing on to San Francisco. Recommended stay - Candlestick RV Park, where a shuttle bus will whisk you Downtown and back.
Day 5-6: San Francisco - Yosemite (approx. 150 miles)
Spend a day discovering the City by the Bay with its switch-back streets, quirky neighbourhoods and top-class museums. Ride the cable car to the top of Nob Hill for sweeping views over the city; walk out on the red walkways of the Golden Gate Bridge; shop in Union Square; and enjoy family fun on Fishermans' Wharf. Then it's time to make your way inland to spectacular Yosemite National Park. Recommended stay - Yosemite Pines RV Park, close to the Park's attractions and handy for the little town of Groveland.
Day 7: Yosemite - Lone Pine (approx. 220 miles)
Take a leisurely drive through the natural wonderland of Yosemite and experience first-hand the jaw-dropping beauty of its towering granite outcrops, dense forests, cascading waterfalls and wildflower-strewn meadows. Then make your way through the stunning landscapes and giant trees of Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, with a stop at towering Mount Whitney - the highest mountain in the Lower 48.Recommended stay - Boulder Creek RV Resort, complete with beautiful views over the Eastern Sierras and the Alabama Hills.
Day 8: Lone Pine - Barstow (approx. 160 miles)
Continue your journey south through the awesome Sierra Nevadas and the parched landscapes of the Mojave Desert, heading for the town of Barstow. Park up to see the second largest meteorite ever found in the States at the Desert Discovery Centre, or step back in time at Calico Ghost Town - a preserved 1880s silver mining town. There's great outlet shopping too, at Tanger Outlet Mall and Barstow Outlets - so bag yourself a bargain while you're here. Recommended stay: KOA Barstow/Calico Campground, for a cooling dip in its pool.
Day 9-10: Barstow - San Diego (approx. 185 miles)
Head back to the coast and pull in at San Diego's Campland on the Bay RV Resort, on the shores of beautiful Mission Bay. Stretch out on the sand, take a dip in the ocean, cool off in the pool or bounce over the waves on a jet ski under the hot California sun. Plus there's all of San Diego to explore; take your pick from its world-famous zoo, the museums of Balboa Park, and the restaurants and bars of the Gaslamp Quarter.Recommended stay - Campland on the Bay RV Resort.
Day 11: San Diego - Newport Beach (approx. 85 miles)
Continuing the beach theme, drive up the coast to Newport Beach and check in at the 110-acre Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort, at the entrance to the Back Bay Nature Preserve and the Newport Bay Conservancy. Take time to enjoy the resort's mile of beach front and endless amenities, rent a boat, or explore the wildlife of tranquil Back Bay by kayak. Day 12: Newport Beach - Los Angeles (approx. 30 miles)
