National Parks Holidays

America's National Parks contain some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes and many of the country's most iconic. In these vast areas, some as big as European countries, you'll find fantastic wildlife as well as every possible terrain imaginable, plus some that are quite simply beyond imagination. Pull up to a National Park kiosk and you know you are in for something special, and with nearly 60 parks to choose from, your only difficulty will be deciding where to venture first.

Looking for a Wild West landscape straight out of The Lone Ranger or Thelma and Louise? Try the famous National Parks of the Colorado Plateau. Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capital Reef and Zion; all boast their own unique vistas, characterised by imposing rock formations, carved over millions of years by the elements. Monument Valley, whilst not a National Park is also high on most people’s bucket list and instantly recognisable from the silver screen.

Want to get closer to nature? How about canoeing through the mangrove swamps of the Everglades National Park, looking for crocodiles and manatees? Or taking a bat tour at Carlsbad Caverns? Or driving through Yosemite, keeping an eye out for bears? The options are endless. But the best way to experience the National Parks is often on foot, with some stunning hiking trails from 20 minutes to two days just waiting to be walked.

But it’s not all about action packed days on National Park holidays. It’s about learning too. Discover the fascinating cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Puebloans in Mesa Verde National Park. Find out about the awe-inspiring power of volcanoes at Yellowstone, the USA’s oldest National Park which contains half the world’s geothermal features. Or see two billion years of geological history exposed in the Grand Canyon. Wherever you choose to go, get ready to be inspired.

Walking

It’s time to lace up your walking boots because when you visit one of America’s National Parks, you’re going to want to get out and explore on foot. Our favourite trails include the Narrows in Zion National Park, where you slosh along a river bed between towering sandstone cliffs, the Hoh River Trail in Olympic National Park which allegedly passes through the quietest spot in America, and the spectacular Highline Trail in Glacier National Park.

On The Water

Many of America’s National Parks, from Acadia in Northern Maine to Voyageurs in the Great Lakes and Glacier Bay in Alaska, offer some wonderful opportunities for exploring afloat. Whether you want to explore hidden coves, follow mangrove trails or kayak into sea caves, there’s something for you. There’s also the opportunity to get up close and personal to marine life from seals to alligators and hump-backed whales.

Wildlife

Watching herds of bison roam in Grand Teton or bears catching jumping salmon in Katmai, Alaska is an unforgettable experience. The USA’s National Parks offer plenty of opportunities to see wildlife in its natural environment with animals such as deer, moose, cougars and black beers commonly found in many areas. Knowing where and when to look for these animals and how best to avoid disturbing them (or have them disturb you) is something any warden will be able to tell you.

Stargazing

Thanks to their often remote locations and protected status, light pollution is at a minimum in the USA’s National Parks and if you look upwards on a clear night, you’ll get a truly spectacular show. Watch for meteors in Death Valley, just a ranger led stargazing tour in Acadia or simply look up in wonder at the night skies in Big Bend, one of the most remote of America’s mainland parks and therefore one of the least affected by light pollution in the US.

Letting Off Steam

From Old Faithful in Yellowstone to the active volcanoes of Lassen Volcanic National Park and Haleakalā on the Hawaiian island of Maui, there’s plenty of geo-thermal activity bubbling away in America’s National Parks. Yellowstone contains half the world’s geothermal features including two-thirds of the world’s geysers. In Hot Springs National Park, the smallest by area in the USA, you can take in a spa treatment in a Gilded Age bath house.

You will need your ESTA!
The US authorities have imposed a requirement for passengers travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), to register for Electronic Travel Authority if you are travelling to the US. Any passengers who have not made an application for and received their travel authorisation via ESTA before travelling may not be permitted to board the aircraft or could be denied admission at the US entry destination. But of course, neither possession of a visa, nor meeting the basic requirements for travelling visa-free on the VWP will guarantee a passenger admission to the United States. The final determination of admissibility is made by the immigration office at the port of entry.

Where can I apply for ESTA?
Prior to travel, you will need to visit https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov and fill out an online application form.

When should I apply?
This will need to be applied for at least 72 hours prior to travel if you intend to travel to America.

How long is my ESTA valid for?
Your ESTA will be valid for up to two years, or until your passport expires. It is also possible for you to use for multiple entries to America. Just be sure to amend any necessary data, such as date of travel and your address whilst in the US.
