New Hampshire Holidays

Tucked away in America's north-eastern corner, New Hampshire is a State for all seasons. Spring is maple syrup time, when the sweet sap is collected and 'sugared off' to become the USA's favourite pancake covering. Summer is for hiking in the spectacular White Mountains, or swimming in crystal-clear lakes. Fall brings spectacular leaf colour to the hillsides, as well as the apple harvest. And come winter's snowfall, New Hampshire holidays are perfect for skiing, snow-shoeing and sleigh rides.

All this is set against a backdrop of dramatic variation and beauty. There's a small strip of coastline stretching south of handsome Portsmouth with its historic homes, and it's studded with good sandy beaches and family resorts. Travel north and you'll hit the majestic White Mountains, home to towering Mount Washington; while in between is a land of forested hills, rolling pastures, and charming clapboard villages complete with steepled churches and farmers' markets.

The scenery is astounding wherever you look on New Hampshire holidays, and there's some picturesque roads just begging to be driven - especially the 'Kanc', which winds past the waterfalls and backcountry lakes of the White Mountains National Forest. If you're in search of the flaming reds and mellow yellows of the Fall foliage, then head for the Great North Woods; or try the Crawford Notch, which cruises through a valley blanketed in maple and birch trees. You can even drive up Mount Washington!T

There's plenty to do once you've stepped out of the car, too. There's a string of lovely towns and villages to explore; there's historic sites to discover; the Lakes district has fantastic watersports, boating and fishing; and there's the feistily independent locals to get to know. The State's motto is 'Live free or die': it's a suitably spirited motto for a uniquely spirited place..

Best Foot Forward

With the Great Outdoors all around, it would be a real shame not to get out and about in it. Walking in the White Mountains is especially rewarding, and while there's plenty of peaks to scale, there's also many more gentle trails to follow. If you tackle the craggy Franconia Notch, not only do you get fabulous views, but you get to loll in the sun at the edge of Echo Lake.

Lake Life

Around 275 lakes and ponds dot the Lakes Region, providing excellent boating, fishing, swimming. watersports and sun bathing. The largest, Lake Winnipesaukee, has a 97-mile scenic loop around it, as well as the resort of Weirs Beach, with ice-cream parlours, amusements, water slides, and Coney Island appeal. Squam Lake is quieter, and was the setting for On Golden Pond.

Happy Shoppers

The shopping on New Hampshire holidays is not only tax-free but incredibly varied. There's lots of farmer's markets to explore, while the region is also well-known for its antiques shops - so don't miss those in Portsmouth or the annual New Hampshire Antiques Show in Manchester (August 7-9). If it's a bargain you're after, try the three-mile stretch of outlet stores at North Conway.

Mount Washington

Take a three-mile trip on the 1869 Cog Railway all the way up to the summit of 1,917-metre high Mount Washington. Once there you'll be rewarded with panoramic views spanning New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont, as well as north into Canada and east to the Atlantic Ocean.

Living History

There's plenty of places you can discover the State's past, like at the Canterbury Shaker Village;but you can't beat Portland's Strawbery Banke, which features 42 historic buildings and charts New Hampshire life from the 1600s through to the 1950s - complete with re-enactments.
