Pacific Northwest Holidays

Mountains, lakes, river gorges, crashing surf and a couple of great cities - they're all here in the Pacific Northwest, so running out of things to do and places to see is never an option. It's more a question of fitting it all in.

Variety really is the spice of life in this stunning region, which spreads from the Canadian border down to northern California, and from the spray-strewn Pacific coast to the yawning chasm of Hell's Canyon. It's a place of ever changing landscapes, and it's not only the view that's varied, because the people are too. It's an accepting kind of place, with a laid-back vibe, and you'll find hikers clad in Gore-Tex sitting side-by side with hipsters downing craft beers.

If it's action you want on Pacific Northwest holidays, then you're in luck, since there's plenty to be had. With a back yard that's pretty much all wilderness, the hiking is sublime, and you can choose to scale peaks, peer over coastal cliffs, saunter through wildflower meadows or explore the rainforest. There's a great choice for adrenalin junkies too, with white water rafting, volcano-watching, skiing, windsurfing and dune buggy racing all on offer.

Rather see than do? No problem, because there's stupendous views pretty much wherever you look, and some of the best come courtesy of spectacular driving routes - like the coast road that snakes along towering bluffs with the rugged Pacific shoreline spread out below; or the route round Crater Lake, with waters so deep its glassy surface glitters with an almost perfect reflection of the surrounding mountains.

Plus there's the lively cities of Portland and Seattle to explore, with museums, markets and some fine restaurants - proving that not only is the outdoors great on Pacific Northwest holidays, but the indoors is, too..

    Perfect Parks

Parks in the Pacific North WestThere's a long list of State Parks and National throughout this area: Crater Lake in Oregon, Mount Rainer, North Cascades and Olympic Park in Washington State just to name a few. Even the cities have numerous green spaces: Seattle has so many it's nicknamed the 'Emerald City', while Portland is home to the largest urban forest in America.

    Classic Coast

All the way down the coast from the Canadian border to California, the Pacific coast offers something for everyone. There's isolated stretches buffeted by the surf and accessible only to hikers; there's panoramic views from the road atop the cliffs; there's family-friendly beaches and resorts; and there's seaside gems like iconic Cannon Beach.

    Take To The Water

There's plenty of ways you can enjoy the water on Pacific Northwest holidays. White water rafting is up for grabs on many of the rivers here, offering the perfect chance to shoot the rapids. There's also world-class windsurfing in the Columbia River Gorge, kiteboarding and sea kayaking - while a trip aboard a ferry to the San Juan Islands, with whale spotting en route, is a must.

    City Life

The relaxed cities of Seattle and Portland have lots to see and savour. With its love of coffee, Seattle has a buzzing café scene, as well as views from the top of the Space Needle and fascinating museums. Portland is known for its stunning gardens, tax-free shopping (don't miss the largest independent bookstore in the States) and festivals. And both cities have great night-life.

    Great Tastes

Not only is there good seafood here, but there's an emphasis on fresh local ingredients, with many restaurants championing the farm-to-fork ethos. Plus there's superb local brews on offer, with wines from the Willamette Valley and a rash of microbreweries serving up top quality craft beers.

You’re going to need an ESTA!
For anyone travelling to the USA, the US authorities have imposed a requirement for passengers travelling under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP), to register for Electronic Travel Authority. Passengers who have not applied for and received travel authorisation via ESTA prior to travel could be denied boarding of the plane or be refused admission at the US entry destination. However, neither possession of a visa, nor meeting the basic requirements for travelling visa-free on the VWP, guarantees admission to the United States. As with most countries, the final determination of admissibility is made by immigration officials at the port of entry.

How do I apply for ESTA?
Just fill in the online application form which you can find at Before you travel, you will need to visit this website and fill in the form.

When is best to apply for my travel authorisation?
You will need to apply for entry via ESTA at least a minimum of 72 hours prior to travel if you intend to travel to America.

How long is the travel authorisation valid for?
Your ESTA will be valid for up to two years, or until your passport expires. It is also valid for multiple entries to America. However you must amend any necessary data, such as date of travel and your address whilst in the US.
