Mountains, lakes, river gorges, crashing surf and a couple of great cities - they're all here in the Pacific Northwest, so running out of things to do and places to see is never an option. It's more a question of fitting it all in.
Variety really is the spice of life in this stunning region, which spreads from the Canadian border down to northern California, and from the spray-strewn Pacific coast to the yawning chasm of Hell's Canyon. It's a place of ever changing landscapes, and it's not only the view that's varied, because the people are too. It's an accepting kind of place, with a laid-back vibe, and you'll find hikers clad in Gore-Tex sitting side-by side with hipsters downing craft beers.
If it's action you want on Pacific Northwest holidays, then you're in luck, since there's plenty to be had. With a back yard that's pretty much all wilderness, the hiking is sublime, and you can choose to scale peaks, peer over coastal cliffs, saunter through wildflower meadows or explore the rainforest. There's a great choice for adrenalin junkies too, with white water rafting, volcano-watching, skiing, windsurfing and dune buggy racing all on offer.
Rather see than do? No problem, because there's stupendous views pretty much wherever you look, and some of the best come courtesy of spectacular driving routes - like the coast road that snakes along towering bluffs with the rugged Pacific shoreline spread out below; or the route round Crater Lake, with waters so deep its glassy surface glitters with an almost perfect reflection of the surrounding mountains.
Plus there's the lively cities of Portland and Seattle to explore, with museums, markets and some fine restaurants - proving that not only is the outdoors great on Pacific Northwest holidays, but the indoors is, too..
